Hurricane Florence did appalling amounts of damage to thousands of communities in the Carolinas. Widespread flooding destroyed homes and has resulted in massive pollution of waterways. Millions of people lost power, and approximately a hundred thousand homes are still without electricity. Roads and bridges have been washed away. Agricultural losses in North Carolina alone are estimated to total over $1 billion.

Among those affected by Hurricane Florence are our brothers and sisters in organized labor. Many of Philadelphia's labor leaders know North Carolina AFL-CIO President MaryBe McMillan, who gave the keynote speech at our annual Atlantic City planning conference in February 2016.  President McMillan has set up a way to make donations to the relief and recovery effort in their state. The North Carolina Workers Relief Fund will use the funds it raises to assist union members and their communities.

We urge every one of our affiliates to donate to the North Carolina Workers Relief Fund, and to encourage your members to send donations, as well. Even small contributions add up, and every contribution sends a strong message of solidarity to our brothers and sisters who have to rebuild their lives and their communities.
